A Novel Structure to Compensate for Frequency-dependent
Loudness Recruitment of Sensorineural Hearing Loss

A simple structure that compensates for frequency-dependent loudness
recruitment of sensorineural hearing loss is presented. The non-linear
structure estimates total input signal energy, and then weights and
combines the output of two parallel filters based on this energy
estimation. Preliminary evaluation of this structure with noise-masked
normal hearing listeners, and speech recorded in naturally noisy
environments, shows a 15-20% performance increase in word recognition
scores when compared to a linear structure.
