James Steven Gibson received the B. S. in Aerospace Engineering (1970), the M. S. in Engineering Mechanics (1972), and the Ph. D. in Engineering Mechanics (1975), all from The University of Texas at Austin. He served one year on the faculty of the Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics Department at The University of Texas at Austin and one year on the faculty of the Engineering Science and Mechanics Department at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia. In 1977, he joined the engineering faculty of UCLA, where he currently is a Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

Professor Gibson’s research interests include control and identification of dynamical systems, adaptive filtering and signal processing, infinite-dimensional system theory, and approximation theory and numerical methods for distributed parameter systems. His research applications include control of laser beams and adaptive optics; modeling, identification and control of flexible structures, fluid flows and micro inertial sensors; and active noise control. He has served as an associate editor for the SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization and for the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control.
